Firebirds vs. Wranglers Round 2 Game 4 RECAP: Coachella shuts out Calgary to advance!

Nuts to the playoff bye being a curse. Let’s take on the Reign.

The Highlights!

Game Notes

  • This game rocked. Unlike previous contests; Coachella really made themselves stout in front of their goaltender; not just abandoning the net-front and trying to let him figure it out, but collapsing to him whenever the shots came through, and locked down the net-front; denying the Wranglers their bread and butter.
  • The Firebirds needed goalscoring from their youth, and who but Shane Wright would go on ahead and put this game truly out of Calgary’s reach (not that giving up a Cale Fleury floating shot from a hundred miles out was anything other than a sign that the Wranglers did not have it) thanks to a solid Ryan Winterton and Cam Hughes pass under pressure. His goal was just awesome, and well placed too.
  • That Cale Fleury goal was awesome, and if that was the kind of goal you’d surrender when the chips are down, I think the Wranglers should have a long talk about what happens next.
  • A Clean sheet when it mattered most for the Firebirds. Chris Driedger, take a bow on making 31 saves.
  • Good on Cam Hughes for a 2 point night in the playoffs. They’re gonna need more games like Hughes’ smart passing to keep going.

With the 3 games won, Coachella Valley now moves on to the Pacific Division Finals, where they face the LA affiliated Ontario Reign. Round 3 of the AHL Playoffs begins on Wednesday at 7pm PT, back in Coachella. The Battle of AHL California begins next week.

And we will see you there. Post The Burning Bird in Victory!
