Calder Cup Final Game 5 RECAP: Firebirds on the brink, Lose 3-2 to Hershey

Win Game 6. Then it’s a whole new ballgame.

The Highlights

Game Notes

  • Honestly, the Firebirds did everything right except hold the lead. They came out swinging to begin the game, they kept up the pressure in the 2nd, and then took the lead early in the 3rd. A long range, frankly unacceptable Hardy Häman Aktell goal went in and the Firebirds simply failed to respond; only getting three shots on net for the entire period. Hershey just needed to trust Hunter Shepard once again…and it paid off.
  • The Firebirds need to figure out how the hell they’re gonna handle the Bears’ rush, because they managed to slice through Coachella and expose Driedger badly tonight. The tying and then game-winning goal were just gross on his part; a worrying trend for him coming into a potential elimination game.
  • The worst part is Ryan Winterton and Kole Lind’s goals go unnoticed, nor Shane Wright’s work to create the turnover that Winterton scored on. If there’s anything this playoff run has taught us, it’s that Shane’s ready, and Ryan Winterton might be right behind him.
  • Another scoreless night on the power play, going 0-for-3. Something’s gotta give, here.
  • Gotta win in Hershey if you wanna survive. That’s how it goes. Make Game 7 happen.

Monday night is do or die for Coachella Valley, as they must go back to Hershey, and win on their terms. That game starts at 4pm PT.

Win it and keep the fires alive. That’s all there is to it.
